Wagyu burgers in Hoboken: which burgers are wagyu at Uncle Rocco

Two of the burgers at 112 Willow Ave are wagyu, and every burger on the menu is grass-fed. Here is which is which, what those words mean, and how to order one.

For a wagyu burger in Hoboken, Uncle Rocco at 112 Willow Ave has two on the menu: the Smash Burger and the Big J Burger. When the restaurant read the DoorDash and Grubhub "Most ordered" lists on September 13, 2026, those same two were the top two on both. This guide covers which burgers are wagyu, what "wagyu" and "grass-fed" mean when they show up on a menu, and how to get one.

Which burgers are wagyu

  • The Smash Burger: a grass-fed, 100% wagyu beef patty with onions, American cheese and pickles on a sesame seed bun, served with fries.
  • The Big J Burger: double grass-fed wagyu beef with fancy sauce, pickles, American cheese, onions and tomatoes.
  • The Rocco Burger: a grass-fed, 100% beef burger with smoked Gouda, special sauce, pickles, caramelized onions and thick cut bacon. The menu does not call it wagyu.
  • The Bread Pudding Smash: the restaurant's baby bread pudding with a 3 oz smashed burger, topped with caramel. The ordering page lists it under Dessert, and its description does not name the beef.

So when a guest asks whether the burgers at Uncle Rocco are wagyu, the answer is two of them, and the menu says so on both. The full set, with photos, is on the burgers in Hoboken page. Dishes here are as described on the menu page, so check it for the current selection.

What "wagyu" means on a menu

The American Wagyu Association, the breed registry for Wagyu cattle in the United States, answers this in its FAQ. It says American Wagyu covers fullblood, purebred and percentage Wagyu that were processed in America. It also says Kobe beef is Wagyu but not every Wagyu is Kobe, since Kobe beef comes from Kobe Prefecture in Japan.

That means the word on a menu names a breed and can cover more than one level of Wagyu ancestry. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service lists Wagyu among its examples of breed claims in its labeling guideline for animal raising claims. The documentation it asks for includes a signed document, such as a certificate from a breed organization, plus support for the breed through the animal's appearance or through genotype traceable to one registered parent or two registered grandparents. That guideline is written for establishments that submit labels for approval, so read it as background on the term. It makes no claim about any one restaurant.

Uncle Rocco's menu lines name wagyu and grass-fed. They stop there: no grade or percentage is listed. A guest who wants more detail about the beef can call (201) 238-2484 and ask.

What "grass-fed" means on a menu

Grass-fed is about diet and wagyu is about breed, so a burger can carry one word, the other, or both. The Smash Burger and the Big J carry both. The Rocco Burger carries grass-fed alone.

The same federal guideline treats Grassfed, Grass Fed and Grass-Fed as one term. On a label, it is meant for cattle fed only grass or other forage after weaning, with no grain or grain by-products and continuous access to pasture during the growing season until slaughter. A partial claim has to say what the animals actually ate, and the guideline gives "fed 85% grass and 15% corn" as its example. It also says "grass finished" is a different claim, because a grass-finished animal can have been fed grain.

Single or double

The Smash Burger is one wagyu patty. The Big J doubles the beef and adds fancy sauce and tomatoes to the same onions, American cheese and pickles. Both are smashed burgers, and our smash burger Hoboken guide sets them next to the Bread Pudding Smash.

The Smash Burger is the one listed with fries. When you order the Big J online, you pick fries or salad as the side, and the ordering page also offers cheese fries, a gluten-free roll or dairy-free cheese for an added charge.

What guests have said

Two Google reviews name the wagyu burgers. Elizabeth Manna ordered the Big J and called it an "excellent smashed burger and bun!" Natalie Allgyer, writing about a table of eight, said: "Most of us went for the smash burger, and it was absolutely delicious!"

How to order

Every burger on the burgers page has an Add to order link that opens that burger on the online ordering page. For a table, book on Resy, or walk in. If you want to ask about the beef first, the number is (201) 238-2484.

When you can order one

The burgers are on for every service, brunch included, because the lunch and dinner menu runs alongside the brunch board. Monday to Thursday the restaurant is open 9 AM to 1 PM and 5 to 9 PM, Friday 9 AM to 10 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 9 AM to 8 PM. On those four weekdays the room is shut from 1 to 5, so a weekday burger is either a morning order or a dinner one.

Pickup and delivery

The online ordering page takes pickup and delivery orders, and delivery orders placed there go out with the restaurant's own drivers. The takeout and delivery guide covers ordering direct in more detail.

If someone at the table wants steak

The burgers share a menu section with two steaks. The menu names Vrola as the source of the hanger steak in the Steak Frites, and the steak frites guide covers that cut. The burger pages name no source for the burger beef.

Finding the room

Uncle Rocco is at 112 Willow Ave, between 1st and 2nd Street. The contact page has directions, the hours for every day and the ways to book.

Allergies

An open kitchen this size cannot promise a fully separated preparation area. The dietary page lists the gluten-free and dairy-free options. For an allergy, tell your server or call before you order.
