Steak frites in Hoboken: the hanger steak at Uncle Rocco

The Steak Frites at Uncle Rocco is an 8 oz hanger steak from Vrola, served with roasted garlic and french fries, and it is $26 on the restaurant's own menu. It sits in the Burgers/Steak section next to Steak & Eggs, the only other steak on the menu at 112 Willow Ave.
Steak frites in general is steak with fried potatoes. It is a standard in Belgian and French brasseries, and Belgium claims to be where it started. At Uncle Rocco it comes out of the open kitchen of a small diner, on the same menu as the smash burgers and the breakfast burrito. It is also one of the few dishes the restaurant filmed for the short videos on its homepage, and both photos on this page come from that footage. The dish is older than the Uncle Rocco name, too, going by a 2024 review further down this page.
What hanger steak is
Hanger steak is cut from the plate, the upper belly of the animal. It is a V-shaped pair of muscles rather than one large piece, and it also goes by onglet and by butcher's steak, the second name from butchers keeping the cut for themselves instead of selling it. It is close to flank steak in texture and flavor and is prized for both flavor and tenderness.
The more useful detail for a diner in Hoboken is where this steak comes from. Vrola is on the short list of suppliers and partners the restaurant names on its own site, as the source of the hanger steak. The Uncle Rocco story puts that down to the kitchen team, which came out of Antique Bar & Bakery, and gives it as the reason a diner menu carries hanger steak at all.
What comes on the plate
In the restaurant's own video, the steak is cut into thick pieces and piled over the fries in a red and white paper boat, with chopped herbs on top, on a red rimmed plate. Another shot from the same footage shows the fries going into the boat with tongs.

A few Google reviews name the dish outright. Moon, a guest writing in August 2026: "steak frites was really good and the environment is nice!!" Niki Poveromo wrote in October 2024, when the room still traded as Antique at 112: "The steak frites were seasoned perfectly and cooked perfectly as well."
Steak Frites or Steak & Eggs
Steak & Eggs, $28, is the priciest dish in the section and uses a different cut. It is a skirt steak with herb garlic butter, served with bacon, two fried eggs and home fries. Skirt also comes from the plate, but it is a long, flat cut that is prized more for flavor than for tenderness, and with eggs and home fries alongside it is the breakfast plate of the two.
A May 2026 review from stephanie desantiago covers that one: "The steak and eggs were outstanding, and the BLT was absolutely bangin’." The choice mostly comes down to the rest of the plate, fries and roasted garlic on one, eggs, bacon and home fries on the other. If one boat of fries won't stretch across the table, the Sides menu has more French Fries at $6, Hash Browns at $5, Herb Rice and Black Beans at $5 each, and Hot Honey Roasted Broccoli at $8.
Both steaks are on DoorDash and Uber Eats as well. When the menus were compared in September 2026, those apps listed the Steak Frites at $29.90, which is 15 percent over the $26 it costs on the restaurant's own menu.
If part of the table wants beef without the steak, the burgers are listed right beside it, since the Burgers/Steak section is just three burgers and the two steaks. The Smash Burger, $12, and the Big J, $19, are wagyu, and the Rocco Burger, also $19, is grass-fed, 100 percent beef with smoked Gouda and thick cut bacon.
Ordering it the way you like it
The online menu doesn't show a doneness choice for either steak. If you care whether it comes out medium rare or closer to medium, tell your server at the table, or ask when you call on (201) 238-2484. The same goes for swaps. The ordering page's own note on special requests says the kitchen will do its best but may not be able to honor every substitution.
Hours are 9 AM to 1 PM and 5 PM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 10 PM on Friday, 9 AM to 9 PM on Saturday and 9 AM to 8 PM on Sunday. The kitchen closes between 1 and 5 on those four weekdays, which matters if you were thinking of a late lunch. Reservations go through Resy from the visit page, and walk-ins are welcome. The room has eighty-odd seats around an open kitchen, and seating runs from the front back to the patio, which is heated.
The Old York list of New Jersey wines is sold by the half bottle and the full bottle. The reds run from a half bottle of What Exit Red at $21 to a full bottle of Syrah at $41, with an Old York Cabernet Sauvignon half bottle at $25 and a Merlot at $35 in between.
For dessert, the Baby Bread Pudding is $12, served with a Tuaca caramel sauce, and the menu notes it is not available gluten-free. One May 2026 review, from 兔爷er, opens with "Reminder: ask for baby bread pudding immediately after you are seated!!!" For a group steak dinner, the private dining room takes birthdays, business lunches and small celebrations, with the full menu available.
The full menu has both steaks under Burgers and Steak, with current prices.
