Brunch in Hoboken, NJ

Most brunch in this town stops at two o'clock. Ours runs until four Friday through Sunday, from a kitchen that makes its own mozzarella and sauces.

Uncle Rocco serves brunch to 4 PM Friday through Sunday, and to the 1 PM close Monday through Thursday, at 112 Willow Ave in Hoboken, New Jersey. The brunch menu includes a breakfast burrito, Nutella-stuffed brioche French toast, a lemon olive oil pancake and avocado toast, and the full lunch and dinner menu is available alongside it.

Why the four o'clock cutoff matters

Brunch is a schedule problem more than a menu problem. The people who want it at ten are a different crowd from the ones who want it at two, and the ones who want it at half three have usually just been told no by three other places. Running the brunch board until 4 PM means the kitchen is still making pancakes when the rest of Willow Avenue has switched to dinner service.

It also means you can eat breakfast food on a schedule that has nothing to do with morning. A late shift, a slow Sunday, a train that got in at three, none of those disqualify you from the french toast here.

Brunch that is not eggs

A brunch menu that only does eggs is a breakfast menu with a later start time. Because the full kitchen is open through the brunch window, the burgers, the salads, the vodka rigatoni and the rotisserie chicken are all available alongside it. So a table does not have to agree on what meal it is having. The rotisserie family meal is the one exception worth planning around: it starts at noon and needs forty-five minutes.

Coffee, and two drinks that are basically dessert

Coffee is bottomless at $5.00. Beyond that there is a Teddy Graham iced latte and a Bread Pudding iced latte, both $9.00. The second one being the bar's answer to the dessert guests mention more than anything else on the menu.

Where to find us

Uncle Rocco is at 112 Willow Ave, in Hoboken, New Jersey, one location, no other branches. Willow Avenue runs north to south through the middle of town, which puts us a walk from most of the Mile Square and a short hop from Hoboken Terminal, where the PATH, NJ Transit and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail all meet. Guests come over from Jersey City, Weehawken and across the river in Manhattan.

The same kitchen handles catering, the private dining room and backyard events.

Such a cute little gem of a restaurant! Our server David was so personable and attentive and made great recommendations! We tried the Watermelon Salad (so fresh!), Mac and Cheese (loved the breadcrumbs and creaminess), and the Big J Burger (excellent smashed burger and bun!). Thank you for having us!

All day

Why breakfast runs to four

The decision, and who it is for

Most brunch in this town stops at two. Ours runs to four in the afternoon, every day. That single decision changes who the room is for.

It means a table can order a lemon olive oil pancake and an 8 oz hanger steak at the same time and neither person has to compromise. It means a shift worker finishing at three can still get eggs. It means a Sunday that started late is not a Sunday that missed breakfast. And it means the brunch board is not a separate restaurant that closes. The full lunch and dinner menu runs alongside it.

The brunch board itself is short and deliberate: a breakfast burrito with tater tots and avocado, a brioche French toast stuffed with Nutella, a lemon and olive oil pancake under berry compote, avocado toast on whipped ricotta, and a bacon egg and cheese on a roll. Sides of bacon and hash browns, and bottomless coffee to sit behind it.

What the split service means for a late breakfast

Monday to Thursday the dining room runs 9 to 1, then closes, then reopens at 5. Friday runs straight through to 10 PM. Weekends are one service, 10 to 9 on Saturday and 10 to 8 on Sunday.

Read that against a brunch board that runs to 4 PM and the practical answer is: on a weekday, brunch effectively ends when the morning service does at one o'clock. On a Friday or a weekend it genuinely runs to four. That distinction is worth a phone call before a 2 PM Tuesday pancake.

What else is available while brunch is running

All of it. The full lunch and dinner menu runs alongside the brunch board, which is the part most rooms cannot do.

The kitchen's own ordering data puts Smash Burger ($12.00), Big J Burger ($19.00), Rocco Burger ($19.00), Spicy a la Vodka ($20.00), Whole Rotisserie Chicken Family Meal ($36.00), Chicken Sangwich ($16.00), Steak Frites ($26.00) and Greek Salad ($16.00) at the top. Read that list again and the pattern is obvious: this is a burger-and-pasta room that happens to serve breakfast all day, not a breakfast room with a burger on the side.
